What dosha really means
Ayurveda believes that there are three biological energies Vata, Pitta and Kapha; found in everyone but in a unique ratio for each individual. This ratio is fixed at birth and is known as Prakriti. It’s not a personality type in the way that a horoscope or a quiz would be. It’s a framework for how your body actually works how you digest, how you sleep, how your nervous system responds to stress, and what conditions you’re predisposed to.
The three doshas are not separate from each other. They are always interacting. Health is the state in which they keep a more or less stable balance. In classical Ayurvedic thinking, disease begins when one or more of them move out of that balance, a state called Vikriti.
Vata – movement.
Vata rules all movement in the body, including nerve impulses, the beating of the heart, the muscular contractions of digestion and the general rhythm of the nervous system. People with Vata as their dominant dosha tend to be quick thinking, creative and are naturally energetic. The first signs of imbalance are usually dryness, irregularity and restlessness disturbed sleep, anxiety, dry skin, constipation and digestion that varies from day to day.
Pitta – transformation
Digestion, metabolism, body temperature, anything that involves conversion or transformation all this is governed by Pitta. The Pitta dominant personality is usually sharp, focused and driven with a good appetite and strong digestion. When aggravated, pitta usually manifests as heat-related symptoms: irritability, acidity, inflammatory skin conditions and a tendency toward overworking.
Kapha – the structure
Kapha is structure, lubrication and immunity in the body. People dominantly Kapha are usually calm, steady and physically resilient. Kapha accumulates in excess as heaviness weight gain, sluggish digestion, congestion and a resistance to change or movement.
Why This Is More Than Just About Words
And this is where dosha is no longer a personality construct, but a clinical construct. Two patients with the same diagnosis for example, PCOS, or hair fall, or joint pain – can have totally different dominant doshas behind the condition, and that difference is what makes the treatment work. If Vata is the cause, the approach will be different than when Pitta is the cause. The symptom, however, remains the same.
Not everybody is a hundred percent one dosha
In reality very few people are a pure single dosha. Most are a combination Vata Pitta, Pitta-Kapha etc with one predominating. This is part of why a generic quiz result (“you are Pitta”) is a reasonable starting point but not a substitute for a clinical assessment, which takes into account the specific ratio and how it’s currently showing up in a person’s health.
